1 * Ideas3 - fixed cryopreservation :: why not use a fixitave to buy enough time4 to ramp up cryoprotectants to an acceptable level at room5 temperature? Then, the whole system can be rapidly cooled and6 vitrified. This method "severs the biological link" in that the7 fixitaves are highly toxic, but current vitrification procedures8 do this anyway since there can be a lot of freezing damage.10 - bitcoin wallet :: Part of "server culture", this would be something11 like "coin.your-domain.com" which would serve as12 your personal trusted access to your own bitcoins13 from anywhere.15 - libpay :: this would be a free library which would enable16 micro-donations to software projects and other projects,17 so that you could donate a panny to "emacs" and it would18 be automitacally split up to every person who has ever19 contributed to emacs in proportion to the amount of20 community esteem, code quantity, bugs fixed, whatever the21 community decides. This might make it posibe for22 programmers to live entirely off of free programming.24 - Browser based graphics-card accelerated distributed computing API.26 - pronouns :: use capital letters A-Z instead of pronouns. They solve27 pronoun referents and gender neutrality, are short to28 say, and you can encode useful information into the29 choice of letter. For example, instead of "Meetings30 shall be presided over by the president, unless she is31 absent." USE "Meetings shall be presided over by the32 president, unless P is absent." We already use this a33 little, since I and U are reserved for the subject and34 object respectively.36 - phone DSP :: software app that inserts an audio DSP between the37 input to a phone and the output. The DSP is delicious38 and configurable, and can allow men to make their39 voices deeper, etc. The app would allow you to hear40 your own voice as others hear it. Most people hate how41 their own voice sounds. The app would also allow one to42 immediately change the paramaters of the DSP using good43 presets.45 - predestined body learning :: a good example of pre destined learning46 might be the mirror neurons.48 - resturant reciept :: use a carbon copy reciept instead of two stupid49 copies.51 - anti google glass :: glasses with mounted lasers and computer vision52 that targets the cameras in google glass and destroy them.54 - wearable towel :: towel with clasp, velcro, whatever, that allows55 one to wear the towel more securely than just56 wrapping it tightly and hoping for the best.58 - Easiest way to disguise onself as a woman is to wear a burka.60 - book-mode :: intelligent color highlighting for books and61 articles. It would disambiguate pronouns and involved62 references. For example, if "Rachael" as red, and "the63 blonde haired girl" refers to "Rachael", then "the64 blonde haired girl" would he colored red. Also, you65 could disambiguate multi part runon sentences by66 highlighting each subcomponent. Maybe would also have67 appliations to scientific reading.69 - Handheld light Rain measurement :: this would be a clear, teflon70 coated plasic disk with a camera underneath the disk. You would71 be able to hold the device out and it would measure the rate of72 accumulation of water droplets from fine mists and light rain by73 using computer vision to measure the diameters of the drops.75 - Big Brother Farming :: This would be a vision system that would76 individually monitor each plant and turn on water, etc to ensure77 maximum/uniform growth for each plant.79 - Discrete Faucet :: A faucet with discrete ticks instead of80 continous.82 - Laser Circle :: take a glass microfiliment and shine a laser at one83 end at an oblique angle. It will make a perfect,84 large circle on the wall, converting a laser beam85 into a laser cone, perserving most of the energy of86 the laser.88 - Invisible Glass :: Take a container of liquid and embed a89 glass sculpture made out of glass that has exactly the same index90 of refraction and color of the liquid. Then the sculpture will be91 totally invisible in the container, and will only be revealed92 when the liquid is drained. The container might be a fancy93 wine/spirit bottle or an hourglass.95 - Caterpillar people :: A race of catepillar like creatures gains96 intelligence after eons of predation by birds, etc. These97 catepillar creatures still undergo metamorphosis into a large98 butterfly-like creature. The metamorphosis process turns the99 caterpillar's brain into mush and reforms it into a minimal,100 dumb, truly insect-like mind, completely destroying the person101 the catepillar was. The society develops all sorts of customs and102 religious interpretations of the metamorphosis. It is viewed as103 good and natural by some since it is part of their life cycle and104 necessary to propogate the species, as only the butterflies can105 mate. Some think that the butterflies are still the same person106 because they have the same soul, even they no longer posess the107 memories or personality of the original catepillar. Some see the108 butterfly form as the "true form" of the species, since the109 butterflies can fly, mate, and are beautiful. Many make a big110 deal out of the fact that 1-2% of the catepillar's mind is111 actually preserved in the butterfly. Some see it as a terrible112 tradgedy and argue that the catepillars should try to stop the113 metamorphosis by technology. Practically, some very important114 members of society undergo hormone therapy and/or surgery to115 prevent metamorphosis so that they can live longer as themselves.117 This is a continuation of Marvin Minsky's ideas about pain being118 something that preserves our bodies while destroying our minds,119 something that is a remnant from our too harsh animal days that120 hasn't caught up to the fact that we have very complex brains121 now. It's a worst-case scenario about a maladaptive genetic122 legacy. Also, it's inspired by "There She Is!!!", which makes a123 compelling point about homosexuality by introducing a second124 gender characteristic (bunny/cat, male/female), which makes125 homophobia look very silly. Here, our own biological legacy of126 pain and death is made to look like the tradegy it is through the127 lense of the the caterpillar people.129 - http://betsofbitco.in/ :: what a great place for an AI/person to130 prove themselves as a good predictor. I wish this could be131 automated.133 - don't forget about that mirror in the student center!, it's two134 mirrors at right angles, like staring at a corner of a room. The135 light reflects so that it shows you what you actually look like,136 instead of your mirror image.138 - remote control wasp :: use computer to drive wings with remote139 power/logic.141 - public (distributed?) database of email->private-key pairs, to142 enable automatic encryption.144 - every equivalent creature will see each others' eyes as black --145 it's universal. Even if the creatures see in radio waves, and their146 eyes are 2m long pieces of jagged metal, when those creatures look147 at each other, they will see black, the absence of light and color148 (since it's being absorbed by the sensor array).150 - intelligent microwave :: it learns where the hot nodes of its fields151 are, and uses them to evenly heat any food item. It has an infared152 camera or something to keep track of how hot the food is. That way,153 you don't get bowls where the edges are boiling, while the center is154 still frozen. Requires a little bit of intelligence/vision, since155 the exact pattern of heating totally depends on the exact shape of156 the food. Wouldn't need a carasouel, and wouldn't need a timer,157 just a desired temperature. Could also detect ice, and automotically158 defrost the parts which are frozen. Might be able to work much159 faster since it can aviod overheating; might have problems with160 heating the insides of thick things, might need a weight sensor too.162 + Would be much cleaner than other microwaves, since food would163 "sputter" and splash liquid much less.165 + Throw in some SIFT+R processing to match previously cooked foods166 and learn the exact heating profiles for things that have been167 cooked before -- it can get faster the more its used.169 - brain-aware image compression algorithm171 - Credit card proxy - would be a company which works like paypal172 except for real world transactions174 - Flesh pillow :: a pillow like the arm or torso of a human, complete175 with simulated temperature, bones, and heartbeat.177 - super screw :: a screw which has only one or two threads and intead178 uses compresion to fit into a hole (the whole shank179 of the screw is split into multiple pieces to180 accomplish this; the tip is a point, then the middle181 bulges out and gets compressed when screwed in.183 - light filter :: (like light tweezers) to mechanically seperate184 fluids with different index of refraction186 - chalk eraser project :: maybe make a directional eraser, for easy187 release of chalk dust, like fur, and how it likes to rest in a188 certain direction.190 - silver socks192 - UROP: magnet gear/metal teeth tape device to distill urine through193 evaporation and easily dispose of urea crystals for use in desert --194 produce drinkable water.196 - UROP: Make the LED in line with the flow for the microinjector, so197 that it may transmit maximum flow. Motor that changes distance of198 internal magnet from windings depending on desired speed so as to199 obtain maximum power efficiency.201 - web scraper which monitors various lottries, looking for "special"202 gimmick changes in the rules (like 4x winnings on Wednesdays) and203 computes expected value...205 - Memristiors novel design :: make an evolutionary algorithm to make206 old stuff using all four basic circuit elements.208 - Conductive concrete210 - little bitty melting pot212 - power strip/timer programmable combination214 - algorthms which learn what their inputs are and in what order, and215 can adapt to changing circumstances -- they remember previous216 arguments and adapt so as to respond to different connections.218 - hear a true pure tone by direct stimultion of the nerves of the ear219 mechanical analogue to the electrical op-amp221 - paper folding device :: make it convienent to fold lots of papers in222 various ways.224 - concrete epoxy :: epoxy with sand/ some other solid material.226 - suspend some ball of material with a high index of refraction and227 shine light into it so it gets stuck -- would the light stay trapped228 forever? Could you build up unlimited quantities of light inside the229 sphere (which could then be released slowly by frustrated internal230 reflection?232 - movie screening :: Movies always are too long at first. One way to233 shorten them ``scientifically" is to record blink rate during the234 move and then remove / shorten the frames of the parts in which235 there are a lot of blinking (average this over multiple people)236 better yet, put it online and do it across thousands of people. I237 got this from youtube in which there is an episode of kill bill238 whih is composed entirely of the parts in whihc opeople had their239 eyes closed. slogan: want to make a movie people can't take their240 eyes off of? Just take those parts out!242 - capture reading of a scientific atricle via screen capture while243 people read it, then use it to make the article better. like the244 movie-pruning idea.246 - super reading program that teaches people the ideal mental mask to247 apply during reading so as to read very fast.249 - explosive thermite epoxy putty (one part would contain the rust, one250 part the alumimum)252 - use the above screen capture routine to make a quiz program tha253 constructs questions about the content you seemed to gloss over254 while reading. could be easy if the pdf came with embedded255 questions. Dylan: automatically generate word-cloud about the parts256 you found most interesting; help others who read the same stuff by257 drawing attention to the interesting parts.259 - make a samurai sword, but use osmiridum instead of martensite for260 the cutting part; it should be a better sword.262 - use the induction technology used to recharge electric toothbrushes263 with no metal links to send data -- without any metal at all!265 - reading is a form of synsethesia267 - A machine which translates the text eg, "ACTGAC" into actual DNA269 - ferro-fluid magnetic field suspended micro generator to make270 electricity272 - alcohol/fluid flow powered battery274 - folding razor blade sword276 - learn perfect pitch using another sense in combination (sight or277 touch)279 - kaleidoscope projector281 - razor blade de-sharpener (for guilt free disposal)283 - bricks filled with luminescent plant material285 - metal grids with seeds inside, which grow together and form a286 durable biological matrix. The metal substrate delivers287 water. (maybe use plastic instead of metal?) Dylan: enrich plants288 with inorganic compounds; electrical interfaces in cellular plant289 matter => remote-controlled photosynthetic/bioluminescent290 structures.292 - conducting extracellular matrix294 - cross-modal memory hashing296 - flossing thimble-gaurds298 - integrate lattice learning with rules by generating hypothetical299 examples301 - wooden refridgerator to give food a better taste Dylan: like barrels302 for wine, or planks for salmon. Maybe just have "flavor planks" for303 your pre-existing fridge. Need to mitigate effect of temperature on304 volatility?306 - radioactive transmutation molecule by molecule :: create precious307 metals or something else economically advantageous.309 - innolculate food with tons of harmless bacteria so that there's no310 room for bad bacteria as a method of preservation312 - pasteur - style holding jar with siphon as a way to store liquids ar313 room temperature indefinately w/o refridgeration.(7/26/2009)315 - Throw rude people out of resturant as a matter of course -- make316 ambiance much better.318 - make something that mixes soap with firehydrant water (and reduces319 the pressure a bit) and use it to clean windows of buildings.321 - make an ocarina out of pure silver323 - fire pen :: pen which burns words on to the page, thus never needing324 any ink. Is ther a way to make it runnable from the325 human's energy?327 - website to design your own soda, and label, and have it mailed to328 you / sell it from your own online store.330 - solar panels that float on the ocean331 - handcuffs with more than two cuffs (3?) :: great for daisy chaining332 prisoniers, binding them to environment, etc.334 - vector based SOUND files :: like the pictures but with SOUND. codify335 sound in a language with enough symbols so that it can describe336 everything and encode it in that. would be like going from speech337 to text or smtg. This would store sound as an image of the338 wavefront encoded as a vector image.340 - Mouse with a horizontal scroll wheel in addition to the vertical341 scroll wheel343 - logic maintance system for big institutions to make sure the things344 they are thinking about doing are not retarded346 - http://www.regulations.gov/348 - genetically engineered glowing fruit -- sell seeds?350 - memory slide :: IF memories are encoded using particular sensory351 impressions, what happens if the sensory organ352 itself changes? those memories would become353 unaccessable. maybe this is why we can't remember354 much from our childhoods. also, could this happen355 throught life as well? Could S remember stuff from356 his childhood?358 - make a completely indestructable phone :: no moving parts or display359 you should be able to slam it around all you want, and it will360 just work. brutally simple. aerogel around the battery, minimal361 interface - never gets too hot, and can be dropped into water. no362 holes -- uses field effects for everything from the buttons to363 inductive charging and data transfer.365 - midi to ocarina "tabs" program (online website? buy ocarinas from it366 too)368 - 3d printing with sound pulses (or just patterns) -- like the 8.03369 lecture371 - lighter flint on spring :: make hot, throw it at something, and it372 makes sparkles!374 - Rebranding New+Clear Energy with informational campaign and375 public debate forum to enforce its transparent and open376 nature. France needn't be the world leader in nuclear377 energy. (Dylan)379 - Engineer a material which has both ductility and high surface380 tension to make the "third" minimal-surface-energy solution to a381 bubble suspended between two equal-diameter rings. (Solutions are382 cylindrical catenary curve, two separated half-bubbles, and a383 double-cone)385 - Textbook whose content can be varied continuously :: alter level of386 difficulty, rigor, diction, emphasize crossover with certain387 other discipline, etc. Content generated dynamically from388 knowledge base, along with questions that are moreover altered to389 guide knowledge acquisition. Motivation: One book of390 knowledge. /One./392 - relationships as a business ::393 http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/Up-or-Out-Solving-the-IT-Turnover-Crisis.aspx394 is an excellent talk about the "culture of quitting," which is about395 better business by letting people go instead of keeping them around396 past their "apex". Focouses on information transfer. Cool idea of an397 alumni network, which for relationships would be a group of398 satisfied ex-lovers, who would recommend new people your way, and399 who might consider coming to you again, refreshed from their time400 away with new stories/experiences. I should look for examples of401 this and how they worked out.403 - coffe with tea :: /rlm-tea/ contains 2% sugar, 10% cream, and 20%404 dylan coffee. /dylan coffee/ contains 5% sugar,405 20% cream, and 10% rlm-tea. Start your mornings406 with recursion!408 - psychic crystal :: in a science fiction story, this would be an409 object that is very easy to move physically but is extremely410 difficult to move with telekinesis.412 ** From Jacob's idea list414 - Roommate-cancelling headphones: uses roommate's laptop mic to seed415 noise cancellation alg in your headzphones (would this416 work?). -Update on sound canceling headphones that take feed from417 tv: how about ones that cancel people talking on the phone by418 receiving the phone signals and playing inverse sound419 waves. #signalprocessing ~jcole@mit.edu421 - Browser based graphics-card accelerated distributed computing API.423 - ClackerAlert -- tells if you slam the keys too hard using sound data424 (and speed/jerkiness data)!.Prevents RSI ~jcole@mit.e426 - Panic Pin :: separate pin that you can tell someone if forced to427 identify your PIN (idea from idea about credit cards)
