     1.6 +        Ohayou, konnichiwa, konbanwa, mina-sama.  Thank you for trying
     1.7 +out my fanfic. ^_^  This isn't my first Sailormoon fanfic, it's my
     1.8 +second. ^^;  But I wrote my first one two years ago, and it wasn't
     1.9 +very good, so... ^^;;;  Anyway, if nothing else it gave me some
    1.10 +experience.

    1.12 +        This fanfic is based on the manga storyline and mostly takes
    1.13 +place in the future (except for this part).  I've planned out four
    1.14 +parts, the other three being longer than this one, but sometimes
    1.15 +authors end up changing outlines completely, so who knows? ^_^;  You
    1.16 +won't really have had to read the manga to understand this story, but
    1.17 +it does help with little tiny details (okay, some big ones, too).  I
    1.18 +tried to stay as close to the storyline as possible and use the
    1.19 +correct dates, so this can be thought of fitting very nicely into the
    1.20 +story.

    1.22 +        I say that, but there's one point which I'd like to make
    1.23 +clear.  As you read farther into this story you might say, "That would
    1.24 +*never* happen!  There's no evidence for that!"  Well, you'd be right,
    1.25 +sort of.  There is some very subtle evidence in the manga, especially
    1.26 +in the artbooks.  Not enough to definitely say it's true, mind you,
    1.27 +but enough to create a fanfic around it. ^_^;  Isn't that what fanfics
    1.28 +are for?  To explore possibilities? :)

    1.30 +        By now I'm sure you're all going "Huh?  What is she talking
    1.31 +about?"  Well, you'll find out in later chapters.  I didn't want to
    1.32 +spoil it for you here. ^^;

    1.34 +        I'm tending to use a fair amount of Japanese in this fanfic,
    1.35 +just because I imagine them speaking totally in Japanese with
    1.36 +subtitles in my mind. ^^;  Most of it's fairly straight forward, and
    1.37 +you should be able to tell what's going on even if you don't know any
    1.38 +Japanese at all.

    1.40 +        I'm rating this fanfic R.  Not all of it is worth an "R"
    1.41 +rating (this part, for example, is at most PG), but some of it is.
    1.42 +It's mostly because of the sexual scenes and situations that will
    1.43 +happen later on.  It's not a hentai fic, though (not that I have
    1.44 +anything against hentai fics ^=^;).  No one really pays attention to
    1.45 +ratings anyway, do they?

    1.69 +        The mid-summer sun was just starting to set over the rolling
    1.70 +hills of the Japanese countryside.  If one listened closely, one could
    1.71 +hear the faint cry of seagulls a few kilometres to the east, where the
    1.72 +Pacific Ocean stood.  The wind was ever so gentle as it washed the
    1.73 +cresting waves ashore.

    1.75 +        One would never guess that a site as peaceful as this would
    1.76 +even exist five months after the fierce battle in the river delta of
    1.77 +Tokyo occurred.  The Silence had fallen upon the Earth, but thanks to
    1.78 +the ever-shinning light of the Messiah, she rose to resurrect the
    1.79 +souls and structures which inhabited the blue-green sphere.

    1.81 +        Out of this a child was born, or rather reincarnated.  With it

    1.88 +        "Ne, Michiru-mama," said Hotaru as she was tucked under the
    1.89 +covers, "what's love?"

    1.91 +        The woman with long aqua green hair giggled a little bit.  She
    1.92 +had a caring smile on her face and looked lovingly at the black haired
    1.93 +child.  "I wonder what made you ask that, Hotaru-chan."

    1.95 +        "Nothing, really...  I was just wondering."  Hotaru looked at
    1.96 +her inquisitively.
    1.97 +
    1.98 +        The graceful woman sighed, still smiling.  "Well, love is the
    1.99 +most powerful force in the world.  It can heal all wounds and brings
   1.100 +joy and happiness to everyone."  Hotaru looked at her mesmerised, and
   1.101 +pleaded with her eyes to be told more.  "There are lots of different
   1.102 +kinds of love, each one of them wonderful.  For example, Haruka-papa,
   1.103 +Setsuna-mama, and I love you very much.  You're our very precious
   1.104 +daughter."

   1.106 +        Hotaru smiled happily at this and replied, "Hai!  I love you
   1.107 +all, too!"
   1.108 +
   1.109 +        Michiru continued, "And then there's the type of love you feel
   1.110 +for a friend, such as myself with Setsuna."  Hotaru just gave a
   1.111 +knowing nod.  "And then...  At one point in your life you'll meet one
   1.112 +person whom you want to spend the rest of your life with.  This
   1.113 +person, you will realise, is the other half of you and part of your
   1.114 +soul.  You'll become unable to think of being with anyone else.  This
   1.115 +person will fill your thoughts and your heart.  Together, you will
   1.116 +make a complete package."

   1.118 +        "Like you and Haruka-papa, ne!" said the child happily.

   1.120 +        Michiru just smiled.  "I think it's time for little girls to
   1.121 +get to sleep."

   1.125 +        "Sa, turn off your lamp."  The little girl complied, which
   1.126 +left the volume of Yeats' poems in shadow.  Thus far, she had
   1.127 +memorised about half the book.  In actuality, the room was full of
   1.128 +ornately decorated lamps, but the one by the bed was the only light
   1.129 +source for the room at that time.

   1.131 +        Michiru bent over and kissed Hotaru goodnight.  "Oyasumi
   1.132 +nasai."
   1.133 +
   1.134 +        "Oyasumi."
   1.135 +
   1.136 +        Michiru shut the bedroom door still with the loving smile on
   1.137 +her face.
   1.138 +

   1.141 +        The bell struck 3:25 at Juuban Elementary School.  A rush of
   1.142 +students started to run towards the shoe lockers.  A girl with pink
   1.143 +hair walked over to a desk at the opposite end of class 6-B.  Her oval
   1.144 +shaped odango had a more than passing resemblance to a certain animal.
   1.145 +
   1.146 +        "Ho * ta * ru * chan!" she said teasingly.  "Kaeru yo."
   1.147 +
   1.148 +        "Hai, Chibiusa-chan!  Ne, why don't we stop at Fruit Parlor
   1.149 +Crown and get some milkshakes?"
   1.150 +
   1.151 +        "Okay!"
   1.152 +
   1.153 +        The two girls walked hand-in-hand out of the school and along
   1.154 +the streets of Juuban.  They idly chatted about the on-again
   1.155 +off-again relationship between Kyuusuke and Momoko.  Before long they
   1.156 +were sitting at a booth in the soda shoppe giving their orders to
   1.157 +Furuhata Unazuki.
   1.158 +
   1.159 +        "Chibiusa-chan, we'll always be friends, right?"
   1.160 +
   1.161 +        This made the pink haired girl look up from her strawberry
   1.162 +milkshake.  She put on the biggest smile and said, "Un!  Forever and
   1.163 +ever!"
   1.164 +
   1.165 +        But the cheery exterior didn't fool Hotaru.  "Then if you're
   1.166 +my friend, why are you leaving?"  There were almost tears in her eyes.
   1.167 +
   1.168 +        Chibiusa's smile faded away.  "Gomen ne.  But I have to go
   1.169 +home.  This isn't my time, and I have to tell mama all that's happened."
   1.170 +
   1.171 +        Hotaru looked dreadfully disappointed.  She didn't like the
   1.172 +thought of losing her best friend for any reason.  "But...when you go
   1.173 +back, I'll be there, right?  The older me, I mean."
   1.174 +
   1.175 +        At this Chibiusa could barely hold back her tears.  She wasn't
   1.176 +allowed to tell anybody that she had never seen Uranus, Neptune, or
   1.177 +Saturn in Crystal Tokyo.  She had sworn Pluto.  She never really
   1.178 +understood why, and no one would tell her.  But to make her friend
   1.179 +happy, a little white lie couldn't hurt.  "Of course you'll be there!"
   1.180 +she tried to say as cheerfully as she could.  Anything for friendship.
   1.181 +
   1.182 +        Suddenly Hotaru got very serious.  "We have to make a pact."
   1.183 +
   1.184 +        "Nani?" asked Chibiusa.
   1.185 +
   1.186 +        "A pact.  We have to promise we'll always be together no
   1.187 +matter what.  Friends forever."
   1.188 +
   1.189 +        Chibiusa smiled.  She liked the idea a lot, so at the joining
   1.190 +of their two pinkie fingers, their pact was sealed.  "Forever."

   1.192 +~*~*~*~*~

   1.194 +        Hotaru was lying face down on her bedding crying more than she
   1.195 +had ever cried in her life.  The past few days had not been easy for
   1.196 +her.  It had come the time to see Chibiusa off to the future, and she
   1.197 +didn't like it one bit.  In her mind's eye she could still see herself
   1.198 +hugging the pink haired girl, tears streaming down her face.  Chibiusa
   1.199 +wasn't any less emotional.  But it was time for her to go.  Everyone
   1.200 +said their goodbyes; Usagi was taking it pretty hard herself.  Finally
   1.201 +the pink beam of light carried Chibiusa up to the sky and then faded
   1.202 +out.
   1.203 +
   1.204 +        Hotaru had been a complete wreck afterwards.  She didn't even
   1.205 +go to school the next day.  Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna were worried
   1.206 +about her, but knew she needed at least some time to herself.
   1.207 +
   1.208 +        Suddenly there was a knock at the door.  "Hotaru, may I come
   1.209 +in?" asked the slightly low voice.
   1.210 +
   1.211 +        "Hai," answered a weak voice.
   1.212 +
   1.213 +        The tall woman came into the dimly lit room and sat on the
   1.214 +bed.  She started to stroke the crying girl's hair.  "Shhh...  It's
   1.215 +all right."  Hotaru looked up at Haruka and flung herself into her arms.

   1.217 +        "Oh, Haruka-papa!  I miss her so much!  I miss her so much!"
   1.218 +
   1.219 +        "I know, I know," she said in a calming tone.  "We all miss
   1.220 +her, but I don't think we can even begin to imagine what you're
   1.221 +feeling.  You just have to believe in your friendship."
   1.222 +
   1.223 +        "Believe?"
   1.224 +
   1.225 +        "Sou, shinjiteru yo.  Your friendship is very strong.  It
   1.226 +can't be broken by the waves of time or anything else.  You will
   1.227 +always be friends, and you know that.  That's what's important."

   1.229 +        Hotaru stopped her crying.  She remembered their pact.  "Sou
   1.230 +yo ne.  We'll be friends forever, we swore it.  I believe...  I
   1.231 +believe we'll meet again, Chibiusa-chan."

   1.233 +        At that moment, a shooting star streaked across the sky above
   1.234 +the house.
