    1.15 +
    1.16 +On February 26, 2015 I went to the [[http://www.organpreservationalliance.org/][Organ Preservation Alliance's]]
1.17 +[[http://www.obs2015.org/][Global Organ Banking Summit]], where I competed in the hackathon
1.18 +competition with around eight other teams from around the world. The
1.19 +goal was to come up with promising new areas relating to organ
1.20 +preservation, with an emphasis on novelty and practicality. Each team
1.21 +was assigned a professional cryobiologist to help evaluate
1.22 +ideas. There were three rounds of judging:
    1.23 +
1.24 +1. An initial review of our ideas where we selected one to develop
    1.25 + further.
1.26 +2. Presentation to a selected panel of judges. Only two teams would be
1.27 + selected out of the eight from this round.
1.28 +3. Final presentation to the entire Summit, where all the
1.29 + cryobiologists present would determine the winner.
    1.30 +
1.31 +Our team came up with the idea of poly-vitrification and presented the
    1.32 +following presentation, available here:
    1.33 +[[../ref/2015-McIntyre-OPA-hackathon-presentation.pdf][2015-McIntyre-OPA-hackathon-presentation]].
    1.34 +
1.35 +Later, we wrote up a summary and published it in an abstract in the
    1.36 +journal Cryobiology: [[http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0011224015001686][Poly-Vitrification Abstract]].
    1.37 +
1.38 +We gave a really solid presentation and ended up winning the
1.39 +competition and the prize money, which we split four-ways among our
1.40 +group members. It was really quite a fun experience!
