Recognizing Actions using Embodiment and
Empathy. It won the 1st Place 2014 Charles and
Jennifer Johnson Thesis Award for best EE/CS MEng
thesis! CORTEX is an exploration of
embodied cognition, the idea that our intelligence is
deeply connected to our bodies and experience of the
world. In the thesis, I teach a simulated worm how to
recognize other worms performing various actions like
wiggling and curling by giving it a sense of empathy:
the worm imagines what it would feel like to be the
other worm, and then recognizes the actions based on its
own previous experience. All code and text for the
thesis is freely licensed under the GPL.
